How to Measure & Size Fiberglass Columns
Sizing a fiberglass column comes down to four numbers: overall height, bottom shaft diameter, whether the column carries load, and which portion of the column you need. Get those four right and the rest of the order is a style decision.
The single most common ordering error isn't a mistyped number — it's a misunderstanding. On most fiberglass column systems the capital and base are decorative sleeves that slide over the shaft. They do not add to the installed height. A "10-foot column" means floor-to-soffit measures 10 feet, not that the shaft is 10 feet and the cap and base stack on top of it. Order on that assumption and the column won't fit. Tuscan and decorative capitals/bases do not add to overall installed height.

Measure at every column location, not just one
Porches settle. Decks slope for drainage. A twenty-year-old front porch can easily vary an inch or more between the left and right column positions, and a long verandah can vary more than that.
Measure floor-to-soffit at each position and write the numbers down separately. If they differ:
Under about 1/2 inch: order to the tallest measurement and shim or scribe the shortest.
1/2 inch to 2 inches: order to the tallest and plan to trim each column individually on site.
More than 2 inches: something structural is going on. Have the porch evaluated before ordering.
Measure to the right surfaces
Take the measurement from the finished floor — including any decking, tile, or topping you plan to install — to the underside of the structural beam or soffit the column will bear against. Not to a ceiling finish that may be furred down, and not to the top of a subfloor you're about to cover.
If the floor isn't level, measure at the point where the column centerline will sit, not at the edge.
Check plumb before you trust the number
Hold a level against the existing post or against a straightedge at the intended column location. If the opening is out of plumb, the front and back of your column bear at different heights, and you'll need to scribe the bottom rather than cut it square.
New construction
Work from the plans, but confirm the finished floor elevation with the builder before ordering. Framing plans often show subfloor height; the column has to reach the finished surface. This is the most common source of new-build sizing errors.
The Four Measurements
Everything else — plain or fluted, tapered or straight, which capital — is style, and style doesn't change fit.

Measuring Diameter
Nominal diameter is the bottom of the shaft
On a tapered column the shaft is widest at the bottom and narrows toward the top. The nominal size is always the bottom measurement. A 12" round tapered column is 12 inches across at the bottom of the shaft and somewhat less at the top.
Measure the shaft, not the base molding. The base is wider than the shaft it wraps, and measuring the base is how people end up ordering a column two sizes too large.
Two ways to measure a round shaft
Direct: a large caliper or two straightedges across the widest point of the shaft, just above the base.
Circumference: wrap a flexible tape around the shaft, keep it level, and divide by 3.1416.
Between two sizes
Landing between two sizes usually means you measured over the base molding, or the existing column is a non-standard or site-built size.

Square columns
Measure the face width, not the diagonal. A "10-inch square column" is 10 inches across one flat face. Measure the shaft above the base, same as with a round column, and check a second face — site-built wood posts are often not truly square.
Choosing a Diameter for New Construction
When you're not matching an existing column, diameter is a proportion decision.
The classical reference
The classical orders each carry a canonical height-to-diameter ratio, expressed in column diameters.
Worth knowing, but read it as a reference rather than a rule. Residential porch columns are conventionally far more slender than the classical canon — a canonically proportioned Tuscan column for a 9-foot porch would be roughly 15 inches in diameter, which is heavier than almost any American porch actually uses. The canon governs full classical orders on monumental buildings, not front porches.

The practical guide
Go toward the larger end of the range when the spacing between columns is wide, when the roof above is visually heavy, or when the column stands alone at an entry rather than in a run. Go smaller when columns are closely spaced or the porch is shallow.
The size matrix is itself a proportion guide
A useful shortcut: the available diameter-and-height combinations aren't arbitrary. A 6" column is offered up to 8 feet and no further. A 22" column isn't offered below 16 feet. The matrix has been built to keep columns from looking spindly at the small end or squat at the large end — so if a combination you want isn't offered, that's usually information, not an inventory gap.

Tapered vs. Non-Tapered: What Changes
Tapered columns narrow toward the top. Nominal diameter is the bottom. If you trim for height, cut from the bottom — cutting from the top removes the neck detail and the capital support ring, and changes the diameter the capital has to fit.
Non-tapered (straight) columns hold the same diameter top to bottom. Trimming is simpler, and either end can generally be cut.
One consequence people miss on tapered columns: because the shaft narrows continuously, trimming from the bottom slightly reduces the bottom diameter. Cut off enough and the base molding no longer fits tight to the shaft. The dimension charts publish a cut-at-bead loss figure for exactly this reason — it tells you how much you can take off before the fit changes. If your trim exceeds it, the base can be made to fit if you specify it at the time of order.
Fitting Around Walls, Corners, and Existing Posts
Columns are offered in four configurations.
A common porch layout uses whole columns across the front and half columns where the porch meets the house wall, so the pilaster reads as a continuation of the colonnade.

Encasing an existing post
Fiberglass column shafts are hollow, and a structural post or steel pipe can be encased inside. The inside dimension chart on each product page gives the internal diameter at the top and bottom of the shaft and the largest round or square support that will fit.
Two things to measure:
The actual post, at its widest point including any wrap or trim already on it. A "6x6" post measures 5 1/2" × 5 1/2" nominal, but a wrapped or built-up post can be considerably larger.
Clearance. You need room to plumb and shim the column around the post, not a friction fit.
Note that a whole column has to slide down over the post from above, which usually means the beam is off or the porch is under construction. For a retrofit where the roof stays in place, you need a split configuration.
Load-Bearing vs. Decorative
If the column supports a roof, a beam, an upper deck, or any part of the structure, it must be a structural-rated column and sized to the load — not to the look.
The load-bearing chart on each product page correlates column diameter with allowable axial capacity, in both concentric (centered) and eccentric (offset) loading. Eccentric matters: a column carrying a beam that isn't centered on it has meaningfully less usable capacity than the concentric number suggests.

Sizing the Capital and Base
Capitals and bases are sized to the shaft, and compatibility depends on two things: the diameter and whether the shaft is tapered or straight. A capital built for a 12" tapered shaft will not fit a 12" non-tapered shaft, because the top diameters differ.
When you're ordering a shaft and cap/base together as a set, this is handled for you. When you're adding a decorative capital to an existing column, or matching a capital to a shaft you already own, you need the top shaft diameter, not the bottom. Send both measurements and we'll confirm the match against the decorative capital chart.
Remember the height rule: capitals and bases sleeve over the shaft rather than stacking under and over it, so they don't change the installed height.
