Yes, many fiberglass columns are structural and load-bearing, with capacities ranging from 8,000 to 20,000 lbs or more, depending on diameter and manufacturer.  When choosing the right manufacturer make sure that their columns have been 3rd party tested to meet the current IBC and IRC building codes.  As a general note, the load must be evenly distributed across the shaft for optimal performance. Some models are designed only as decorative covers (non-load-bearing) and can be split to wrap existing posts.

Installation varies by manufacturer, (you can view our installation instructions here) but general steps include:

1. Measure the opening and trim the shaft from the bottom only (use abrasive blade).
2. Raise the soffit slightly if load-bearing for easier fitting.
3. Slide cap and base over the shaft.
4. Secure with adhesive, brackets, screws/nails (non-corrosive).
5. Caulk joints and paint. Split columns for wrapping require reassembly kits with adhesive and fillers. Always follow manufacturer instructions; professional installation recommended for structural use.

Yes, they are suitable for interior applications like foyers or staircases, offering the same durability without moisture concerns.  If you have fiberglass columns installed on the outside of your house it would be a good idea to install them on the inside as well.  The way the same style and dimensions are throughout the house inside and out.  Wood columns often have different dimensions and profiles.

Some manufacturers have a Class A fire rating (low flame spread) as a minimum product requirement in their manufacturing process. Our Fiberglass columns are Class A Fire rated and meet the 2024 IBC and 2024 IRC Building code requirements.  Check the manufacturer specs for smoke density and exterior vs. interior use when looking to purchase.
